Smiling, he held out his hand for me to take. I moved towards him, but as I did, the water started churning wildly. There was fierce splashing all around us and then, a crocodile emerged, as big as a Hummer, leaping like a dolphin into the air, hesitating at the top of its climb and, following an elegant pike diving back into the water, straight as an arrow, its jaws wide, swallowing Jack whole. The second book in Kathryn Ledson’s Erica Jewell series is making me laugh. A lot. Just visualise (or vigilise, to use a word favoured by Erica’s dotty-but-sweet mum) the crocodile mentioned in the teaser, leaping, piking and diving … made me smile. Thanks to an Internet and phone crisis at work, I’m almost finished the book (of course, the issue resolved itself with less than 10 pages to go …) and it’s proving the perfect antidote for enforced boredom. Erica is a delightful character and as a suddenly undercover agent, she’s all fingers and thumbs, managing to attract madcap characters that makes her look dead serious. I’ll be reviewing this one shortly.
