Is there ever such a thing as too many books? I don’t think there are too many books to read, but there can definitely be too many to review. Often I’m sent books and, with an already sagging review shelf, these unsolicited books often often don’t fit in to my schedule. Other times, I am unable to finish a book I intended to review (for various reasons), or I don’t have time for a full review. Sunday Shout-Out aims to acknowledge these books and the publishers who have sent them to me.
Sunday Shout-Out is a bookish meme hosted by Monique of Write Note Reviews. If you’re a book blogger and you want to join in, just:
- Share the title, author, blurb and image from a book (or more than one) you want to acknowledge
- Share the genre, price and link to the publisher so readers can follow up if they like the sound of the book
- Ping back to Write Note Reviews in your post.
1. Broken Dolls by James Carol, RRP $19.99, published by Faber & Faber and a copy and sent to me by Allen & Unwin.
It takes a genius to catch a psychopath …
Jefferson Winter is no ordinary investigator. The son of one of America’s most renowned serial killers, Winter has spent his life trying to distance himself from his father’s legacy. Once a rising star at the FBI, he is now a freelance consultant, jet-setting around the globe helping local law enforcement agencies with difficult cases. When he accepts a particularly disturbing case in London, Winter arrives to find a city in the grip of a cold snap, with a psychopath on the loose who likes abducting and lobotomising young women. Winter must use all his preternatural brain power in order to work out who is behind the attacks, before another young woman becomes a victim. As Winter knows all too well, however, not everyone who’s broken can be fixed.
I fully intended to finish this book and review it properly, but unfortunately I left it on a plane with my Kindle last month. I got the Kindle back … not the book. Someone must have read the blurb! I was about one-third through and while it’s hard to “enjoy” something with such a disturbing plot, I was gripped by the tension created by the current crimes and Winter’s father’s legacy. It’s the first in a series and news is that a TV series is in the offing. If you like crime fiction with a highly intelligent but tortured genius as the protagonist, check Broken Dolls out.

It sounds like one I’d be interested in as I do like crime fiction that features psychopaths. Winters back story sounds interesting too although I wonder if would he have been allowed to join the FBI?
