Note, the format of my Short and Sweet reviews differs in that they simply comprise the book blurb and a short response (hence, the short and sweet).

Disclaimer, Renée Knight

I pulled Disclaimer by Renee Knight from my to-review shelf, thinking it would be a good book to take on a five-hour flight to Sydney. I was wrong. I finished the book before I even left the house. It was that hard to put down. Here’s the blurb:

What if you realized the book you were reading was all about you?

When an intriguing novel appears on Catherine’s bedside table, she curls up in bed and begins to read. But as she turns the pages she is sickened to realize the story will reveal her darkest secret. A secret she thought no one else knew…

Disclaimer: While every effort is made to ensure that readers get satisfactory beauty sleep, Write Note Reviews makes no apology for the addictive nature of this book and its tendency to keep readers awake until it is finished.

Addictive, stealthy and a little bit creepy, Disclaimer took me by surprise. The idea of reading a book that’s about oneself is freaky enough, but the way it unfolded was even more so. While Catherine is discovering that someone else knows her darkest secret, that someone is making sure her husband, son, and others know, too. Her son and husband, and even her colleagues, turn against her and everything she has worked to protect starts to unravel. It’s like a nightmare come to life.

A thrilling story about separating fact and fiction, Disclaimer places debut author Renee Knight firmly in the must-read thriller category. Her ability to create tension, and the cleverness of the twist, is terrific. If you’re after a thriller, do yourself a favour and read this. But read my disclaimer first.

Available from good bookstores and Random House Australia (RRP ). My copy was courtesy of Random House.

  1. I loved this book so much I’m sure it will make my top ten books of the year – certainly one of the best I’ve read so far – the addictive nature of the way the story is told was brilliant. Great review.

  2. I really want to read this! Doesn’t look like it’s available in the US yet, but I’ll keep an eye out for it. Great review!
