REVIEW: THE FLORENTINE BRIDGE BY VANESSA CARNEVALE

Reviews on this site will now comprise a book blurb and a short response.

A gorgeous cover, an enticing blurb … I was excited to read The Florentine Bridge the minute my signed copy arrive. It made my Top 10 for 2016. Here’s the blurb:

Full of heart and hope, The Florentine Bridge is a tear-jerking read for those looking for an Under the Tuscan Sun-inspired setting.

Nineteen-year-old aspiring artist Mia Moretti has been cancer free for nine months. Her battle with the illness has taken its toll on her, leaving her severely depressed and tormented by an overwhelming fear of dying. Inspired to make a fresh start, Mia decides to move to Tuscany to pursue a simpler life where she can, with any luck, find the motivation she needs to paint again.

What she doesn’t count on is meeting Luca, a handsome Italian mechanic who sweeps her off her feet. As Mia slowly lets down her walls and allows Luca in, her passion for life is reignited, and her new perspective begins to inspire her art. But just when she’s ready to let go of her past, a tragedy dredges up all the anxieties she’s worked so hard to overcome and threatens her budding relationship with Luca.

Awww. The Florentine Bridge is one of those keep-a-tissue handy books that pulls at your heartstrings over and over … and over. Vanessa Carnevale ticked all my boxes when she set her debut in Tuscany and had art as the passion for her protagonist, Mia. But then she went and brought in the charming, smouldering Luca and my heart melted.

The Florentine Bridge is heartfelt and heart-warming. It’s sensitive and it’s sensual – in terms of the writing and the romance itself. It’s the kind of book that takes you from your couch or bed (or wherever you’re reading) and flies you off to Italy for a bookish adventure of the heart. Did I mention it’s set in Italy? And that you’ll cry? More than once? It’s an unashamedly romantic read that has introduced a new talent to the Australian romance genre – my prediction is that Vanessa has more tears, drama and love in store.

PS. I loved that I understood the Italian phrases.

PPS. I really, really want to go to Florence now and see if the painters really do sit by the bridge.

Available from good bookstores (RRP $29.99). I purchased a copy.

  1. I’ve got this book on order, having loved listening to Vanessa’s podcast over the past few months. I agree, the cover is divine and having read your review I’m really looking forward to reading it. I’ll be sure to stock up on tissues and read it when the house is quiet and I can fully immerse myself in the Italian setting.
