READING IN BED

When I was a young girl I loved weekends because I could lie in bed and read for a while … until Sausage realised I was awake and made me get up. It’s probably safe for me now, as a mother of teenagers, to admit that I used to wake early and read, turn off the light ever so quietly when I heard Sausage stir, pretend to be asleep when she popped her head in, and then start reading as soon as she got in the shower. I usually managed another half an hour of reading that way … and it felt so deliciously secretive.

These days I rarely allow myself that luxury. With four kids, there’s always something to do, someone to take somewhere. So, it was with great happiness that I made the most of the chance to read in bed this morning with no fear of the “guilts” (I’m good at them). Do you ever feel like that when it comes to reading?

I’ve just finished reading Home on the Range by Margaret Yardley Potter and Elizabeth Gilbert (it’s a cookbook/memoir and ironically I just typed giblet instead of Gilbert … my head is still immersed in the world of food), as well as Backlash by Lynda La Plante. Reviews to come – today I have set myself the task of writing three reviews – if I can drag myself away from the book I have just opened (The Perfume Lover by Denyse Beaulieu).

But first, food calls. It’s time to make some bread. And then I will write reviews. Promise.
PS. Stage 1 of bread making is under way.
