ON CHOOSING NOT TO WEAR SENSIBLE SHOES

Some of you may recall that I was until 2011 a newspaper journalist/news editor for a suburban newspaper. One of my favourite parts of the job was writing a column I called Balancing Act, a title which reflected (and still does) my turbulent life at the time. Writing Balancing Act was a form of release for me – I turned difficulties into laughter, or found things to smile about when things were at their toughest. I’ve slowly been scanning the columns in – I hope you enjoy them.

The person who suggested I keep the sensible shoes in the car was Wise Woman – then my editor, now my mother-in-law. Surf Dude was one of the people watching me stumble. He was the opposition paper’s photographer and is now my father-in-law. Truly.
