Sometimes it’s hard to summon up the creative energy … or to take advantage of it.
I went back to my day job this week after a three-week break, and with the tiredness of that, combined with an unsettled stomach, I haven’t felt like cooking. Or anything much, except reading. It’s been an eggs-on-toast week, with light, clear soups for me. Pretty boring food for photos, but luckily I took this macro shot on a day creative cooking was at full strength.
I love cooking with fresh, seasonal produce and over the last six months I’ve been focusing on eating more of a plant-based diet. This salad (broad beans, baby peas, herbs, asparagus, green onions, and snow pea sprouts, topped with toasted pine nuts) tasted and looked delicious, so of course I had to set up a photo (people are used to waiting for food in this house). I love the way the colours burst out, making my mouth water, even though the salad is long gone.
Louise hasn’t been feeling great this week either, but she has been taking herself down to the beach and trying out long-shutter speeds at the end of Perth’s long, slow summer days. She lost her thongs to a rogue wave on the first visit (I nearly did when I was taking photos at the beach the other night), and the quick-release plate for her tripod on the second —although that was later found on the back seat of her car. Third time lucky, she says: “It was windy, rocking the camera and leading to some not-so-beautiful blurred shots.” This tumbleweed on the beach was one of her successes – I love the soft effect of it.

Once a week, Louise (of Louise Allan: Life From the Attic) and I team up to share creative photos on our websites. It’s all part of our challenge to stretch ourselves creatively.
