Blue Eyes got to The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro (author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize winning The Remains of the Day) before me and was captivated for days (he reads slowly and carefully). At the end, he was thoughtful, describing the book as “otherwordly”, “strange” and “hard to describe”. He wants me to hurry up and finish reading it – I’m halfway through. The language is beautiful, the story quite extraordinary.
Here’s the teaser:
“A couple may claim to be bonded by love, but we boatmen may instead see resentment, anger, even hatred. Or a great barrenness. Sometimes a fear of loneliness and nothing more. Abiding love that has endured the years – that we see only rarely.” (The Buried Giant, p47)
Here’s the blurb:
‘There’s a journey we must go on, and no more delay…’
The Romans have long since departed, and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. But at least the wars that once ravaged the country have ceased.
The Buried Giant begins as a couple, Axl and Beatrice, set off across a troubled land of mist and rain in the hope of finding a son they have not seen for years. They expect to face many hazards – some strange and other-worldly – but they cannot yet foresee how their journey will reveal to them dark and forgotten corners of their love for one another.
Sometimes savage, often intensely moving, Kazuo Ishiguro’s first novel in a decade is about lost memories, love, revenge and war.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Jenn of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This is on my list, but I am one of the few people who really disliked Remains of the Day (in fact never finished it), so I don’t have high expectations. Liked the teaser, though.
I have yet to read The Remains of the Day – I don’t even know how it’s escaped me. This book was … different. Beautiful, strange and different all at once.
How is the action in it? Is it slowly paced? Hoping they find their love is really “true and abiding”.

This sounds unique and pretty intense. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing!
It is both of those things, that’s for sure.
Ooo that definitely is intriguing. I was deeply disturbed by Never Let Me Go but I may have to look this one up. Here is my TT http://www.readinggrrl.com/2015/03/teaser-tuesday_31.html
Sounds fascinating! This isn’t the sort of story I usually read, but I’ve been branching out lately.
My Tuesday post features THE ROSIE PROJECT.
I loved The Rosie Project and even met Graeme Simsion recently. He was kind enough to let me interview him for this blog: http://writenotereviews.com/2015/03/21/author-insight-graeme-simsion/
