TEASER TUESDAY: PIECES OF A LIE BY ROWENA HOLLOWAY

I’ve just started Pieces of a Lie by Australian author Rowena Holloway. So far all I can say is that there’s a good atmosphere of menace, and much of the tone is distinctly rough-and-ready Australian, as you’ll see by the teasers below. I’m hoping to get stuck into it tonight.

Here’s the teaser:

‘Right, Kegs. Listen up and listen good.’ Slab leaned on his desk and jabbed his cigar at the useless bastard in front of him. ‘You’re about to start earning your keep.’ (p9)

And another one:

‘You be careful. If Slab reckons you’re stirring up trouble, you’re history.’ He handed Dunny a creased twenty. ‘You know why they call him Slab?’

The kid shrugged like he didn’t care. ‘Cos he’s built like one?’

‘Nah. ‘Cos he’s put plenty of blokes under one.’ (p49)

Here’s the blurb:

One dark secret … Two Troubled Souls…

Mina Everton is the daughter of an embezzler. That one fact still overshadows her life, though he vanished with the cash years ago. Then she finds his fob watch in a local junk store. Detective Lincoln Drummond is investigating a series of robberies. Simple. Until he meets Mina, who gets to him in ways he’s never faced before, and it soon becomes clear the truth behind the robberies is far from simple. Mina Everton’s search for the criminal father who deserted her years ago draws her into the sinister underbelly of the Australian suburbs and a lie twelve years in the making. Despite Mina’s growing feelings for Drummond, she can’t bring herself to trust him. And the closer she gets to her father, the more she looks, and acts, like a suspect. To expose the truth she must choose—destroy herself … or the only man who believes in her.

Did this get your interest? It sure captured mine.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
